About Greg Fergus
Born in Montreal,
Greg has lived in the Outaouais since 1995. He
has volunteered and worked in the Liberal Party
since the age of 14, when he first rode his bike in
suburban Montreal with cardboard signs under one arm
and a roll of packing tape around his wrist.
Greg learned early
how politics could be a means for positive change in
people’s lives. As a staffer in the Honourable
John Manley’s constituency office Greg learned that
an exceptional Member of Parliament takes the time
to listen to what the people say. Greg
was also fortunate to act as a policy advisor to the
Minister for Human Resources Development Canada and
senior policy advisor to the Minister of
International Trade, working on files such as
softwood lumber, the Free Trade Area of the
Americas, older worker adjustment programs, and
youth employment strategy.
Greg’s work
experience touches on the private, not-for-profit,
and public sectors. He and his wife ran a
housing co-op, where people from diverse backgrounds
came together to create a vibrant and supportive
community-based housing. Greg then joined the
private sector as the ethics director in a trade
association where he was responsible for ensuring
that the pharmaceutical industry markets itself
fairly and appropriately.
Greg has also been
very active in his community as a founder and
long-serving president of his neighbourhood
residents association. Greg always takes pride
in helping the association organize annual weekend
fairs that provide entertainment to children,
encourage local economic activities, and foster
community engagement.
Greg has long been
involved in organizing youth activities in the
community and as a leader in his parish. Greg has
also led numerous interfaith activities including
raising funds in order to lead a large team of youth
volunteers to the World Youth Day in Cologne,
Germany in 2005.
Fairness and
inclusiveness have become Greg’s trademarks.
When applied to politics, Greg has successfully
brought Liberals together in every role he
has taken on, whether as the National President of
the Young Liberals of Canada in the mid-1990s, or in
riding associations, provincial wings of the Party,
leadership races, and most recently as the National
Director of the Liberal Party of Canada.
Greg wants to apply the same inclusive approach to
the Pontiac riding.
A graduate of both
the University of Ottawa and Carleton University,
Greg holds bachelor degrees in Social Science and
International Relations. He has also attended
graduate school in International Relations.
Before sunrise on most weekend mornings, you will
find Greg running on the Eardley-Masham Road in
Luskville, as he is an (almost) obsessive
long-distance runner. Greg is 40 years old,
married, and he and his wife are proud parents of
three children: Alex, 16, Ben, 14, and Sarah,
almost 12.
